Lars Askjelson Lid (Li, Lee, Lie) and Ingeborg Olsdatter Fyre left for America in 1860 with three small children: Askjel, 1853; Ole, 1854; and Marjo, 1856. (Reference: Evanger Boka II:403, Jørnevik). Ingeborg was a sister to Ole Olson Fyre. The family survived by walking back to Decorah, Iowa, which took eight days. Other children included Nils, 1860; Anna, 1862; and Olina, 1865. Spouses of the six children include: Askjel (Cecelia Grindeland), Ole (Kari Dale), Marjo or Mary Louise (Andrew A. Holtan), Nils (unknown), Anna (Ole Olson Gordon), and Olina (unknown).

The Lars Lee family lived at Jackson, Minnesota during the Indian uprising of 1862, but they escaped with their lives. How or why this came to be is unknown. Perhaps they took action sooner than some of the others. They left their home and all their property, walking with what they were able to carry, and headed for Decorah, Iowa. There were four children: Askjel, 9, Ole, 8, Mary 6, and Nels age 2. They followed the timberlands and lowlands to avoid detection. Lars had his family sit on the ground at night with their backs together, and covered them with slough grass to protect them from the rain. They arrived at Decorah eight days later hungry and sore-foot, where they lived with the Ingebret Grindeland family. Askjel Lee, then nine and Cecilia Grindeland, then seven, later became husband and wife. The Lars Lee family came to Canisteo Township, Dodge County, South of Kasson, Minnesota in 1864.

Lars and Ingeborg Førde Lee came from Bergsdalen, Voss, Norway in 1860. They lived with his older brother, Anders, in Kendall County, Illinois, for four months before they settled at Jackson, Minnesota.

Lars and Ingeborg Førde Lee and their six children: Askjel 1853-1886, Ole 1854-1932, Mary (Holtan) 1856-1936, Nels 1860-1888, Anna (Gorden) 1862-1916, and Oline 1865-1880, are all buried at the West Saint Olaf Church. From the obituaries of Lars Lee and Mary (Lee) Holtan
