Notes for King Pyrrhus of Epirus
Pyrrhus, King of Epirus
Pyrrhus was a cousin of Alexander the Great, but did not have the same luck on the battlefields. His greatest victory was a "pyrrhic victory" which forever won him a place in Western languages and thinking. He was a hostage of Ptolemy I, who helped him return as king of Epirus. Ever an adventuring opportunist, he fought campaigns for Greece in Italy and Sicily against Rome and Carthage.
